On the subject of publicity, I strongly suggest you be your own advocate here. Write the article yourself, take your own photos, and hound the editors til they publish. The press is overworked, understaffed, and far more interested in really hot news items than in education. It’s our job to arouse their interest. I have even gone as far as interviewing myself for articles and publishing without a by-line. Papers will do that.

I know we all feel like when we’re doing such great stuff that the public should automatically be interested. Probably not, unless a bomb goes off or something. We are evangelists of education and it’s our job to “spread the gospel” until they start coming to us.

A laptop in a class won’t improve learning. It requires an instructor who already has the required skills and knowledge to operate it. I know skills are learnt. Then a teacher is a powerful tool to teach the skills on use of a laptop. Teachers attitudes on use of technology to enrich their research ability and creativity is therefore a prerequisite for technology to improve learning.

Milke–My group at the Middle School of the Kennebunks just won “Best in Sate” in the Verizon APP Challenge and we are on to the National Competition. The group is all girls and 1 boy! I think we need to be “Presentors of Opportunities” to our young women and model enthusiasm for them and they will follow. It is so important as so many future careers-even in the Arts (which I teach)- have a relationship with Science and Technology. Mary McCarthy

It is true that technology shouldn’t be a separate category, but with all the instructional changes and expectations around PBE and Common Core along with the governor’s assault on public education finding and/or incorporating the time to make this happen may be, I am sorry to say, almost impossible!
